Powers
Brian Michael Bendis / Michael Avon Oeming

To refer to POWERS as the new comic sensation of 2000 would be an understatement. It is a title that consistently sells out month after month. Nor is it an understatement to refer to POWERS as one of the great hopes for the comic book industry. It is a title that proves the limitless storytelling possibilities of the medium and explodes the stubborn “superheroes only” club stereotype that dogs comics in the eyes of the outside world.
That statement is all the more sweeter considering the fact that the world of POWERS is one of superheroes, but not like any we’ve encountered before. Bendis and Oeming’s creation gives us superpowered beings, but ones who dwell in a shadowy periphery; their intentions not always clear to the little people.
Detectives Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim must interpret those intentions when the public safety seems to be threatened. Assigned to “Powers”-related cases, they enforce a code of laws designed to keep the “Powers” in line.
In essence, POWERS is a brilliantly written police detective story, in which two good cops must navigate a sea of corruption and bureaucratic meddling, where conflicts between right and wrong, ethics and politics are heightened by the presence of enormously powerful and potentially deadly beings. And like any great cop story, moments of humor, both subtle and outrageous, abound (Bendis and Oeming excel at this; read the POWERS coloring book, which is an hilarious lampooning of every conceivable superhero concept).
Powers is now printed under Marvel's creator-owned Icon line. The complete Image series and the first Icon arc are available in 8 trade volumes.
